Funding Successful. This project reached its goal before 02/03/2016.

The project

Nowadays the public opinion is mainly focused on the known preventive effects of physical exercise in a large variety of potentially very harmful pathologies.

Not less important is the huge potential of exercise-therapy in treating chronic diseases. In fact the scientific literature and the public claims are slowly and consistently moving towards a more appropriate use of physical exercise as a therapeutic aid in addition to the common pharmacological approaches, leading to common benefits either in terms of public health or mere business.

From this point of view the so called “rare” diseases, as muscular dystrophies and chronic inflammatory diseases, appear orphan and it is striking for them the deep fracture between continuous requests of therapeutic intervention, the unavailability of therapies currently on trials (stamina cells, etc.), and the inadequacy of the cure in the periods of time following the clinical diagnosis, when the patients and their relatives feel to be abandoned by the Institutions and look closer the inevitable worsening evolution of their degenerative process.

Regardless this premises, it is mandatory to have a closer look to possible new and/or alternative approaches, only apparently conceptually easier than the pharmacological one, such as sport-therapy and nutritional-therapy, aiming at slowing down the decline of the patient’s quality of life.

The Laboratory of Motor Activity in Rare Disease (Lusammr) of the Sport Medicine Centre located in Voghera aims to put forward a new approach to the patient’s care in the time next to his/her clinical assessment. During this period it is crucial for us to value the residual functional capacity of the subject, which is fundamental to maintain his/her daily life activity. This approach requires the patient to consciously become full artifice and first protagonist of the program based on adequate training and nutrition under multi-specialists supervision.

In our vision, then, the patient is an athlete with the need of a correct adaptation of training load and nutrition approach to his/her specific needs.

That is it.

Although our purpose appears conceptually simple, its achievement is very complex as it comes through main obstacles as, in particular, the need to find correct experimental methodologies which allow to objectively assess the effects of the interventions starting from the pathophysiology of the disease.

Considering that fatigue represents a common clinical feature often first symptom flag of chronic diseases leading to initial diagnosis, our Team is now involved in the development of new methodologies to study the cerebral a muscular components of fatigue and their responsiveness following specific sport-therapy and nutritional interventions.

The study focuses on the identification of central and peripheral components of muscle fatigue during sustained contractions based on multichannel surface electromyographic recordings and the identification of changes in tissue blood flow and oxygenation.

The results of our commitment shall hopefully contribute to the disclosure of a new culture that could help bringing official reward to sport-therapy as an alternative or complementary approach to traditional approaches in selected diseases.
