The project
What is anorexia nervosa?
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that can endanger the life of those affected. The disease is manifested by a refusal to maintain the weight or the fear of gaining weight, until to have a distorted image of own body. A person is defined anorexic when the body weight falls below 85% of the expected according to age, sex and height. In Italy, there are more than 3.500.000 people, 20% of which teenagers, who suffer from eating disorders. Anorexia nervosa, is the first cause of death among young Italian girls aged between 12 and 25 years old. It represents a real socio-health alert. Surely, it is a disease that results from a state of emotional and psychological distress: those who suffer from anorexia nervosa feel unable to defend themselves from pain, lack of affection or have internal conflicts, disappointments at work, home, school, difficulties in romantic relationships. However, it is not just a psychiatric illness, but there are important biological implications as well. Prolonged fasting and an insufficient nutrient supply contribute to alterations in cellular energy metabolism that coincide with an increased production of free radicals and oxidative stress. The aim of our research work will be to demonstrate how these cellular changes, could be used as a new target for treatment.

Goals
Our aims:
1) patient recruitment, formulation of inclusion and exclusion criteria, food diary, development and adjustment of extraction protocols from biological samples and data analysis.
2) collection of clinical and behavioral data from AN patients and healthy control subjects, collection of blood and urine samples, analysis and evaluation of oxidative stress and hormone profile. Data analysis to correlate the level of oxidative stress and the antioxidant molecules between AN patients and healthy subjects; moreover, results will be correlated with the severity and the course of the disease. According to the results obtained during the study, a nutraceutical will be evaluated in order to assess a possible beneficial effect in AN subjects.
