The project
In 2014 following a first no-profit dentistry mission operated by Umberto Marchesi, Paolo Martegani and Maurizio Silvestri, the charity project “A smile for Ayamé” came into being. Its aim is to enable the development of a dental office in Ayamé’s hospital, assessing and treating the dental issues of the local population.
The main objective resides in the long-term promotion of the local dental viability, achievable through the renewal of health facilities and the training of local dentists.
This can be enabled through a pre-established number of annual missions formed by colleagues willing to grant their medical services in Ayamé’s hospital for free. Our goal is made even more challenging by the territorial extension of the area, as the ideal catchment area isn’t only represented by the population of Ayamé but also by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages and brousse.
Objectives to achieve:
- The establishment of a dental clinic in Ayamé Hospital through the construction of 2 operative dental offices properly equipped, including a sterilization area and a dental technician laboratory appropriately equipped.
- The recruitment of a team of colleagues in order toguarantee a continuous dental assistance throughout 12 missions over the next two years.
- The training of dental and paramedic personnel to guarantee the long-term facility self-reliance
- Dental preventive care in schools through awareness raising campaigns aimed to encourage and increase a correct oral hygiene among the younger part of the local population. Thus the most common dental problems found in the younger section of the population might be prevented.
