The project
This project supports the realization of an ornithological observatory on the continental side of the Strait of Messina. The Strait represents the only area of the whole Italy and Central Mediterranean of international important area for raptor migration. Tens of thousands raptors cross the Strait two times per year during their movements between Europe and Africa. The other migratory flyways (Gibraltar, Pyrenees, Batumi-Georgia) are regularly monitored while in Italy an ornithological observatory is still lacking.
Long-term monitoring of raptors and other migratory birds will allow the collection of relevant data for their conservation. Observed numbers of the different species reflect population trends while changes in passage dates might reflect climate changes. The Strait Observatory will fill a gap across the continental monitoring flyways of Europe. Field visual observations will be integrated with bird radar equipment that have already been active in the area for the last three years. Finally, the observatory will represent a chance for local people as well as birdwatchers and wildlife lovers from all over the world to meet ornithologists, to learn about bird ecology and conservation and to enjoy the migration show.
