The project
Who are we and what multiple sclerosis is
AISM, the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association, is the only organization in Italy that takes care, in a structured and organic way, of all the aspects related to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), through an overall perspective that embraces the theme of the rights of people with MS. , health and social-health services, the promotion, the orientation and the financing of scientific research.Founded in 1968 to represent the rights and hopes of people with MS, in order to guarantee them the possibility of carrying out their life project, our task is to provide hospitality, information, guidance, support and services. Every day, in a widespread manner, thanks to a network that includes 98 provincial sections, regional coordination, 50 operational groups, and thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of over 13,000 volunteers. For the RESEARCH, in order to identify the effective therapies and treatments to slow down the course of the disease and to find a decisive cure tomorrow, we have to take in action all the resources, thanks also, since 1998, to the work of the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (FISM). Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, unpredictable, often disabling disease, and one of the most serious of the central nervous system. MS can begin at any age of life, but it is mostly diagnosed between the ages from 20 to 40 and especially in women, who are three times more affected than men.The cause, or better, the causes are still partly unknown. The most common symptoms are motor difficulties, visual disturbances, loss of balance, spasticity, lack of strength, fatigue, sensitivity disorders, like sexual and cognitive, of the humor, speech and sphincter function disorders. In Italy there are 130,000 people with MS, in the province of Pavia about 900 people.
Why is it important to play adapted physical activity (AFA)
For people with MS, physical activity helps prevent postural disorders by strengthening muscles and bones and by increasing elasticity, as well as by reducing the sense of fatigue. If carried out consistently and in contexts of social activities, it is also supportive in dealing with moments of discouragement and depression.By Adapted Physical Activity (AFA) we therefore mean a non-health exercise programs, carried out in groups, specially designed for people with chronic diseases aimed at lifestyle modification for the secondary and tertiary prevention of disability. The AFA activity integrates with the rehabilitation activity provided by the area of Pavia.If carried out in water, the AFA exploits the properties of water (weightlessness and support) to increase the residual skills necessary for various motor activities. The body weight is lightened up to 90% (if the dive is up to shoulder height) in order to face the various rehabilitation exercises with a significantly reduced effort.In fact, water facilitates movements and allows for a better stabilization of posture. For this reason, it becomes easier to walk or to maintain an upright position, sometimes impossible out of the water. This activity has an important psychological and motivational impact, as the person is able to perform tasks that is unable to perform out of water. Finally, the activity in pool also plays a role in improving social integration.Naturally, it is necessary to evaluate the characteristics of the swimming pool and adopt the criteria for access to this activity that guarantees its safe performance. For the reasons mentioned above, if you want to start this activity, contact the contact person for the Wellness Activities Guidelines (see below) to prepare an ad hoc project.
Why to do Acquagym
Water aerobics consists of group gymnastics practiced in the water to the rhythm of music which involves both bodyweight exercises and with the use of various tools. This activity aims to promote the development of the muscles and the elasticity of the joints, as well as to achieve greater mental well-being. Doing water aerobics allows you not only to tone muscles, to improve movement and sensitivity, and to reduce stress and tension but, according to a study, it is also a valid solution to relieve the symptoms of people affected by multiple sclerosis. In fact, water eliminates the problem related to the body weight, which comes down to the 90% when immersed up to the shoulders: the movements are thus less tiring and violent impacts on the joints are avoided. In addition, the water temperature, which is usually around 26 ° -27 °, guarantees constant cooling and prevents excessive heat from leading to a worsening of the symptoms of multiple sclerosis.
Goals that this project realistically intends to achieve with the money raised through this crowdfunding campaign
The main objectives of this project are:
- prevent the onset of secondary complications related to immobility
- prolong the benefits of rehabilitation;
- create moments of socialization and prevent social isolation.
In MS, to take part of AFA activities has the following benefits:
- Improve of strength, endurance and endurance;
- Increase of lung capacity (it improves the strength of the respiratory muscles and increases the body’s ability to use oxygen to produce energy in a more efficient way);
- Improve fatigue;
- Improve or maintenance of muscle elasticity;
- It improves stress and mood
