The project
Nowadays, an increasing number of young women meet the challenge of disease that once upon a time would have broken any dream of motherhood.
Prevention, early diagnosis and personalized treatment have progressed very much but, unfortunately, there is still the possibility to develop premature menopause because of treatments that cure oncological diseases or other sever medical conditions. Indeed, within the ovary the cells devoted to reproduction (oocytes) could be damaged by those same treatments that aim to save women’s life.
How we can throw motherhood project over the obstacle of a disease?
Today we can, thanks to cryopreservation of oocytes, anytime the time for diagnosis and treatments of several malignant conditions allow us to do so. Medical assisted reproductive technology permits to collect eggs quickly and safely and to preserve them intact until women have been completely cured and maybe they wish to become biological mothers. In addition, we do not have to forget even the male counterpart. Indeed, several conditions in males my pose them at risk of future infertility and sperm cryopreservation is an option for young and adult men who wish in the future not to lose the potential to become biological father.
Ob/Gyns with peculiar expertise in reproductive medicine should be proactive in order to educate and raise awareness on fertility potential because this issue is extremely relevant in a country such as Italy in which maternal age at first pregnancy is increasing every year.
Our center for Assisted Reproduction at the University of Pavia – IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo is investing very much to offer every woman and man meeting the challenge of a severe disease the hope of becoming mother and father following the burden once they are completely free of sickness. Today we can make a promise of fertility in spite of the bad luck and this is very important for a number of reasons, but, mostly, to improve coping strategies and ingenerate positive expectations, which are relevant to the spirit of our patients.
However, we need your help!!! We need more space and time for our women and men facing the burden of a severe disease because for them a quick counselling and early intervention is essential. It is mandatory to increase our resources both in term of equipment and motivated skilled people in order to improve methodological strategies for an effective treatment.
Please, do not miss the opportunity to contribute to our project: to have a baby born in a couple following a severe medical condition. Endorse our project because any woman and men in the world should not pay the price of survival with permanent infertility.
We need your help because with “mothers over the time of a disease” we could always a future full of life!
