The project
Pleural Mesothelioma is a malignant aggressive tumor of the pleura lining (mesothelium) for which, to date, no effective therapies exist. Survival following diagnosis comprises between 9 and 17 months. Asbestos is the main cause of the disease. The geographical areas in which the factories producing asbestos were located are those which, sadly, register the highest number of cases of mesothelioma. Counted among these areas are some zones of Piedmont and Lombardy (Casale Monferrato, Broni (PV). The Department of Pulmonology in which we operate is a reference center for the treatment and study of this fatal disease. The aim of this project is to find a new effective therapeutic treatment for curing mesothelioma, based on our clinical competence and experimenting together in the use of innovative technology. In fact, our laboratory is working in collaboration with a group of chemistry experts from Milan-Bicocca, and we have developed a very small new particle (nanoparticle) capable of incorporating chemotherapy drugs and of striking the mesothelioma tumor cells in a selective and efficacious way. This new therapeutic approach plans to introduce, directly into the pleural space, nanoparticles capable of recognizing only the tumor cells as targets, enabling them to attack them using a larger quantity of drugs, or multiple drugs simultaneously, and to reduce the toxic effects on other organs.
Studies conducted in test tubes in our laboratory on mesothelioma cell lines have demonstrated that the use of this nanoparticles is effective in reducing the uncontrolled proliferation of the tumor. Thus, it is necessary that we continue with our promising research in order to identify the most efficacious mix of drugs and the best methods of administration, to achieve the accomplishment of producing a treatment which can be transferred as soon as possible to use in clinical practice.

We have divided our target into 3 steps:
Step 1 - 10.000,00 euros
for the design and realization of targeted drug loaded nanoparticles and purchase of laboratory reagents
Step 2 - 10.000,00 euros
for 6 month contract for a biologist/technician for the realization of the lab tests on mesothelioma cells
Step 3 - 10.000,00 euros
for further 6 month contract for a biologist/technician for the realization of the lab tests on mesothelioma cells
