The project
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease, which is characterized by a defective or deficient insulin secretary process, glucose underutilization, and increased blood sugar (hyperglycemia). In the world, diabetes affects 415 million of persons, 60 million in Europe and 3.5 million in Italy. The problem is more serious than we can think; in fact, in 2015 diabetes provoked the death of 5 million of people. This number is much more high than that of the people who died from other diseases, like HIV/AIDS and malaria (1.5 and 0.6 million, respectively).
The life quality of diabetics, and in general of people who present disease risk factors, like hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, overweight, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, can be improved with the help of a healthy nutrition.
Our mission is to study foods which help to prevent diabetes or to support diabetic patients. Our research started in the laboratory of Food Chemistry and Nutraceuticals of the Department of Drug Sciences of the University of Pavia where we study the healthy properties of Baobab, which can be used for the development of functional foods useful in the prevention of diabetes.
To continue our research, we need to conduct in vivo studies in particular clinical trials to confirm the data obtained in the previous research in vitro.
