The project
Intensivists are involved in clinical scenarios defined time-dependent: for example, after a severe car accident, during major surgery, after a cardiac arrest, an intracranial haemorrhage or during a respiratory distress. The patient is severely affected, unstable, and requires a prompt disease-recognition and treatment before it’s too late. To assess patients, we only have our hands and ears, since we have no time for advanced exams such as CT scan, radiographs or blood samples.
How to improve the assessment of the critically ill? Ultrasound is an outstanding tool for us; it allows looking inside our patient and improving his assessment with a direct glance to the organs and the diseases they are affected from. Ultrasound devices are small, portable, bed-side and do not imply any delay in critical patient’s management. We can use ultrasound to visualize and better understand brain, neck, heart, lung, abdomen, bladder, liver, bones… A direct visualization of the problem means being able to recognize it and treat it earlier, and finally to save a life.
The Intensive Care Units (ICU) of Policlinico S. Matteo treat over 1000 patients per year, from the age of 0 to 100. The GRIP (Group for Research in Intensive care in Pavia) is pushing forward the research in ultrasound applied to critical care and emergency medicine, both at a national and international level. We are a group of young doctors and researchers working day and night in ICU and Pre-hospital Medicine; we dedicate great energy and enthusiasm to our patients and to our research. In the last years, ultrasound became more and more useful in so many different situations that the devices we have are no longer enough to support this growing need.
We need your help to acquire new devices but also to spread the know-how to use them at best. Don’t miss the chance to give your contribution to save a life! Support the GRIP and its research activity!
